The Tottenham defender scored twice as Tottenham extended their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from set-pieces in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the scores a short while after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a number of chances, while Vicario made a series of excellent saves to guarantee Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to review the score on the screen and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's side up to third in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and are half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils duties at both ends of the field

Following a uninspiring midweek display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a mere two shots on goal, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defence, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded somewhat and fans flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a massive concern for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's pair of recognised centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to add to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having room and opportunity to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, as well, failed to make an impact after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.
