A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in national projects. They were built at an accelerated pace, beating predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party called for an prompt halt in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these national undertakings.
